The projected Hispanic population of the United States for July 1, 2050 is 132.8 million people, or 30.2% of the nation’s total projected population on that date. “Origin” can be viewed as the ancestry, nationality group, lineage or country of birth of the person or the person’s parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States. People who identify as Spanish or Hispanic may be of any race.

The effect of using Spanish-language media serves to promote a sense of group consciousness among Latinos by reinforcing roots in Latin America and the commonalities among Latinos of varying national origin.

This definition, as “male Latin-American inhabitant of the United States”, is the oldest and the original definition used in the United States, first used in 1946. Under this definition a Mexican American or Puerto Rican, for example, is both a Hispanic and a Latino. A Brazilian American is also a Latino by this definition, which includes those of Portuguese-speaking origin from Latin America.

The term Latin America was first coined by South Americans in France in the mid-19th century and then by the French as Amérique latine, during the time of the French intervention in Mexico in the 1860s. It is a combination of the European prefix “latino-” and the New World, “America”. It was used to symbolically sever Mexico’s Spanish roots, while at the same time, reinforcing a notion of belonging between the two nations.

On October 26, 2015, Lovato and Nick Jonas announced that they would be touring together on the Future Now Tour. She was honored with the first-ever Rulebreaker Award on December 11, 2015 at the 2015 Billboard Women in Music event. On March 21, 2016, “Stone Cold” was released as the third and final single from Confident. On July 1, 2016, Lovato released a new single titled “Body Say” to promote her tour.

On June 21, Lovato released a new single titled “Sober” which she referred to as “my truth” and discusses struggles with addiction and sobriety. In February 2017, Lovato executive-produced a documentary, Beyond Silence, which follows three individuals and their experiences with mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety.

According to the Smithsonian Institution, the term “Latino” includes peoples with Portuguese roots, such as Brazilians, as well as those of Spanish-language origin. However, given the fact that “Latino” is derived from Latin, then the other cultures/languages that are also derived from Latin, i.e. French, Italian and Romanian, are also accurately defined as “Latinos”.
